The Lake District is very much an alpine environment around the towns of San Martin de los Andes, Villa la Angostura, Bariloche and Esquel. Dozens of deep-blue and turquoise lakes form a necklace along Argentina's Northern Patagonia. The Nahuel Huapi National Park surrounds the Nahuel Huapi Lake in the foothills of the Patagonian Andes. It is dominated by the high mountain chain of the Andes, many lakes, rapid rivers, waterfalls, snow-clad peaks, glaciers and extensive forests. Many outdoor activities are possible, such as trekking of high mountain and steep hills, rafting, sailing, horseback riding, skiing at Cerro Catedral, kayaking, mountain biking, rock-climbing, canopy, paragliding and golf. There are many exclusive fly fishing lodges in strategic locations, since the area is famous for its trout.
